Yesterday, Italian website Gazzamercato reported Liverpool are keeping close tabs on 25 year old Gregoire Defrel, and could consider signing him in the future. The French forward has also been linked to several other Premier League clubs, but a move to Liverpool at this time makes little sense.
However, reports in the Italian media continue to link the 25-year-old with a move to the Merseyside club. According to Italian website Calcio News 24, Liverpool are ‘quietly’ following Defrel, but could face competition from Leicester and Napoli.
Calcio News 24, however, believe Defrel won’t be sold cheaply, and could cost any interested club as much as €18m-€20m.
Calcio News 24 cite Corriere dello Sport to say Ranieri wants to replace Jamie Vardy with Defrel, but there is no mention of that on Corriere dello Sport’s website or in the newspaper, as far as we can see.
We said yesterday none of this makes any sense at the moment, as Defrel hasn’t really been a prolific goalscorer, and will need to be much more consistent to secure his big move.
At the moment, there appears to be a real effort to up the player’s profiled, and the idea of clubs being interested in him.
Crystal Palace and Swansea City were linked earlier this year, and Liverpool’s rivals Everton were linked last season. On Monday, Arsenal were linked with Defrel by The Daily Mail.
