Good news for Everton: Henry Onyekuru is very close to returning, with DH in Belgium claiming he could be back on the pitch in the next couple of weeks.
Sidelined with a knee injury since the new year, the Nigerian winger decided to avoid getting surgery after the Toffees deemed it unnecessary, something Anderlecht, where he’s currently on loan, disagreed with.
Normally, it wouldn’t really matter if a young players didn’t feature constantly out on loan, but for Onyekuru, it’s very different, as game time is needed for him to make Nigeria’s squad for the World Cup.
If he doesn’t get the international caps, he can’t get the work permit needed to play for Everton, which means he’ll need to spend another year out on loan next season in order to get time on the pitch.
The question here is: will he slot back straight into Hein Vanhaezebrouck’s first-team?
DH’s answer is: probably not.
The arrival of Kenny Saief on loan from Gent is a problem for the Everton loanee, as the USA international has made the left-wing his own in Onyekuru’s absence.
It also doesn’t help the Belgian league is currently in its very important ‘playoff season’, meaning ‘every detail counts’.
This isn’t exactly the time to play a half fit winger.
