Leighton Baines has recommended striker Martin Sherif to Everton manager David Moyes, who has asked for an assessment of the club’s youth prospects.
That’s according to the Dutch edition of ESPN, who cover the youngster today and how he has worked his way into Everton’s first team ‘from nowhere’.
They explain that a bright future awaits the 18-year-old striker, who appears set for his first-team debut in the near future. Indeed, they believe a ‘football fairytale’ is in the making.
Despite nobody in Dutch football knowing the youngster yet, they’re confident that is about to change as Everton deal with injuries and opportunities open up.
ESPN explain that Everton were ‘hugely enamoured’ with Sherif when they first saw him and beat English competition to get him. The ‘click’ was right with the Toffees for the player too and six years on it appears to have been the right choice.
He’s been slowly working his way up the ranks at the club and has now been a regular in the first team squad under Sean Dyche and now David Moyes.
The latter was recommended the striker by Leighton Baines, having sought out his former player’s advice on the club’s youth ranks. He wanted to know who he could add to his squad and was recommended Sherif alongside Roman Dixon and Isaac Heath.
Sherif has been a regular on the bench since, particularly because Everton are short of options thanks to injuries to Youssef Chermiti, Dominic Calvert-Lewin and loanee Armando Broja.
The youngster has been earning praise from Everton’s staff too, who like his character and believe he can make steps forward technically as well.
The hope for Sherif is that he can make his debut, perhaps this season, and continue to impress Moyes and his team moving forwards. That’s certainly possible with Baines recommendation already putting him on the right path.
