Tottenham Hotspur will have to ‘up the ante’ if they wish to complete a deal to sign Cristian Romero, reports Gazzetta dello Sport on Sunday.
With rumours rising of a potential move to Spurs for the defender, there’s been all kinds of claims in recent days.
According to the Italian newspaper, Tottenham have already made an offer of ‘€40m plus €10m in easy bonuses’ yet even that isn’t even for Romero’s current club Atalanta.
The Serie A side are said to want €55m ‘immediately’. It would be unusual for such a big transfer fee to paid in one go, so the ‘immediately’ likely means Atalanta want that amount guaranteed, rather than hit through various bonus payments.
Romero joined Atalanta on loan from Juventus with an option to buy, and the Brescia club will activate their €16m clause.
Given the player will then be set for a longer contract, that’s why they feel they can be tough in negotiations.
Tottenham paying €55m guaranteed is unlikely, and Spurs may feel there are better options on the market.
