In need of help at the back, Bayern Munich eventually decided that signing Eric Dier from Tottenham was the best call, doing so on loan despite the player having just six months left on his contract.

The England international had hardly been playing at Spurs under Ange Postecoglou, which made the move raise a few eyebrows when it was being negotiated.

Following the first home loss of the season for Bayern Munich at the weekend, Lottar Matthaus spoke to Sky Germany, where he criticised the signing of the Tottenham man.

He said: “Of course, they want to put themselves in a position with a bigger squad so that games like the one against Bremen don’t happen to them again, but I doubt whether these are reinforcements. Dier in particular was not the player who tore up trees at Tottenham in the last six months.”

The pundit makes it clear that Dier arriving from Tottenham short of fitness and with little football under his belt isn’t exactly what Bayern should be aiming for considering who they are.

Not only that, but he also reminds everyone that the signing makes Uli Hoeneß sound very hypocritical.

Matthaus added: “Uli once said: ‘We will no longer bring in players who sit on the bench or in the stands at other clubs’. And the latest transfer looks a little different.”

Prior to his move to Bayern Munich, the 30-year-old had made just four appearances since the start of the season for Tottenham, totalling a very meagre 199 minutes of football.
