In January 2018, Guido Carrillo left AS Monaco and made a switch to Southampton.
When the Saints signed the striker, Mauricio Pellegrino was in charge of the South Coast club, but the manager was sacked less than two months after the 27-year-old arrived at St Mary’s Stadium.
Mark Hughes was appointed as the Argentine’s successor and the former Manchester City boss allowed Carrillo to go out on loan to Leganes, where he reunited with Pellegrino.
Pellegrino’s contract with the Spanish side expires at the end of the season and Leganes are now 11th in the table with 40 points after 31 games, trailing eighth placed Athletic Club Bilbao by three points.
Carrillo gave a lengthy interview to Agencia EFE (relayed by Mundo Deportivo) and was asked ‘Will you do everything possible to continue in the Leganés if Pellegrino continues?’
He said, “We’ll see, it’s [Pellegrino’s contract] still missing. The truth is that I don’t know anything. In principle I have to return to Southampton because I have no option to buy but you will see what happens at the end of the season.”
Carrillo also explained why he decided to join Leganes on a temporary deal.
“They were different circumstances. One is Mauricio and his technical staff came here and they already knew me. In addition, I was interested in the club’s project,” the attacker added.
The frontman has scored six goals in 25 league appearances this term for Leganes.
