Edouard Mendy is on the verge of becoming a Chelsea player, with Canal journalist Eric Bresnard saying “It’s done”. He says the move is official, so now it would just be a case of waiting for the announcement.
Kepa Arrizabalaga wasn’t able to impress Frank Lampard last season, with the Blues manager clearly losing faith in the Spaniard towards the end of the season. Multiple players were rumoured to be potential replacements, and the choice of signing Mendy from Rennes was something of a surprise.
The French club have been trying to get the best deal possible, and had originally wanted one or two Chelsea players included in the operation. With the player very keen on the move, the two clubs have narrowed positions in recent days, with the French media putting the value of the transfer at around €28m.
Rennes manager Julien Stéphan pretty much confirmed the move on Saturday evening, quoted by FootMercato as saying: “We’re looking for a goalkeeper, it’s no secret. Edouard will certainly leave us to join Chelsea. In this position, we need to get someone in very quickly, I cannot give you names since there is nothing definitive.”
