Celtic signed Gustaf Lagerbielke from IF Elfsborg in August 2023 and Brendan Rodgers didn’t utilise him regularly in his debut season.

Last summer, Celtic let the centre-back join FC Twente on loan, and he clocked in 2,084 from 29 games so far.

On February 27th, Twente technical advisor Jan Streuer made desire to retain Lagerbielke public. He also insisted it’s unclear what Celtic plan to do with him after this season.

Despite Streuer’s public admission, Twente Insite now insist the Dutch club have doubts about extending the 25-year-old’s stay.

The Sweden international’s recent performances have been criticised and was an unused substitute in Twente’s 1-1 draw against PEC Zwolle last weekend.

Twente manager Joseph Oosting indicated he wanted to start Max Burns but opted for Alec Van Hoorenbeeck because Burns was ill. The manager’s admission is seen as a signal the Celtic man is no longer a starter.

With the recent development, Twente technical director Arnold Bruggink has a dilemma whether to buy Lagerbielke.

Burns and Van Hoorenbeeck are likely to be the experienced centre-backs next season and have contracts until 2026. Twente would need two centre-backs if Mees Hilgers were to move elsewhere.

Lagerbielke knows the club well but hasn’t been convincing recently. If they decide to buy the Swede, Twente have to find an agreement with Brendan Rodgers’ side.

According to the report, Lagerbielke is valued at €4m and Bruggink must decide whether to buy him in the summer.
