Earlier today, we relayed a concoction for reports from both France and Italy regarding Fiorentina’s surprise swoop for Aston Villa’s Jordan Veretout.
The Serie A side came in last minute with a €7m bid and a better wage package for the 24-year-old, who now seems set to sign there instead of Saint-Etienne, who had agreed a €4.5m deal with the Villains .
At the time, the player was apparently ‘reflecting’ on the offers, but it seems that is now a thing of the past, as his former club’s director of football basically revealed in a press conference to present two new signing, relayed by Le Progrès, they’ve given up all hope of signing Veretout.
He said: “He’d given us his word. We’d prepared everything for his signing. I’m very disappointed, saddened even, because the offer we made him was very interesting. It was a nice offer. He didn’t know what to say when I had him on the phone. To each their own, but it’s a big disappointment”.
Making it very clear he didn’t want to play in the Championship, Veretout spent last season on loan at Saint-Etienne, where he made 43 appearances in all competitions, scored four goals and picked up five assists.
As things stand, the player is still technically contracted to Aston Villa, but that’s very likely to change in the near future, and he won’t be moving back to France.
