Long linked with Everton, Rachid Ghezzal is now a free agent after the forward decided to turn down the chance to renew his contract at Lyon.
Unhappy with what he was being offered by the French club, the 25-year-old decided he was better off trying his luck elsewhere, with a number of Italian clubs allegedly in for him at the time.
That, however, hasn’t exactly worked out for him, as AC Milan and AS Roma have strengthened their sides with other signings, and now he’s stuck in a bit of no man’s land.
Thankfully for him, however, it seems Watford are ready to come to the rescue, as Le10 Sport claim Marco Silva’s side have expressed their interest in signing the right winger.
The French website report that preliminary talks have taken place with Watford, who would have the financial power to meet the demands Lyon refused to agree to when they tried to keep the forward.
Everton offered Ghezzal £350k per month when they were negotiating to sign the player from Lyon last summer. It was an excellent opportunity at Goodison Park, especially given Ronald Koeman’s signings since, and Ghezzal may well regret turning down Everton.
Already signing Tom Cleverley, Will Hughes, Nathaniel Chalobah, Kiko Femenia and Daniel Bachmann this summer, Watford are yet to bolster their frontline, something which the arrival on a free of Rachid Ghezzal would do nicely.
We’ll have to wait and see if this develops into something real, or if this was just Watford testing the waters to see how much the Algeria international wanted.
