Former Leeds United goalkeeper Marco Silvestri has told the Italian media he wanted a move to Italy due to the stress he was under playing in England.
The 26 year old recently joined Hellas Verona, after three seasons with the Championship side.
Speaking to Corriere di Verona, Silvestri was asked about his time with Leeds United, and what prompted him to leave Elland Road and return to Serie A: “Something had broken in England. I felt the stress, I blamed the distance from home. In the first two years I played 92 matches, then I only played in the cup. As soon as Verona’s proposal came, I didn’t hesitate. I wanted to get started. I’m ready to play.”
Two weeks ago Verona confirmed Silvestri had signed a four year deal with the club after passing his medical. The Italian side are now back in Serie A after a one season absence, and are looking to consolidate their place in the top flight.
With Leeds Untied signing Felix Wiedwald from Werder Bremen earlier in the transfer window, it seemed likely Silvestri would become surplus to requirements with the Championship side.
The former Cagliari goalkeeper had to be content with being back up to Rob Green last season, with most of his games under Garry Monk coming in the cup competitions.
