Born and bred in Marseille, a return to the team that put him on the map might not be a bad move for Crystal Palace’s Mathieu Flamini.
Moving on a free to Alan Pardew’s side from neighbours Arsenal, the 32-year-old defensive midfielder has yet to make a start for the Selhurst Park contingent, totalling a measly 19 minutes of football since arriving at the club on September 8th.
With a contract until June 2017, the former AC Milan midfielder could be set for a return to his former Ligue 1 club in January, at least according to Le10 Sport.
The French magazine take a look at some of Marseille’s potential targets for the winter transfer window, and report the Ligue 1 side have already made contact with Flamini about a possible deal, and they say something could be sorted.
Of course, just like when Marseille gambled on Abou Diaby and Lassana Diarra, this transfer, if it comes off, could go one of two ways, and the Frenchman’s lack of match fitness is a problem the club could do without, looking for players who can impact the side straight away.
This certainly is doable, but whether it’s the right choice for Marseille, that remains to be seen.
