Earlier this summer the Danish sport media ran a campaign to build a Christian Eriksen to Barcelona rumour. They tried their best, it was on Danish TV and in Danish newspapers nearly every day over a couple of weeks, but it all seemed too forced.
Even the Catalan press didn’t take too much notice, and the Catalan sport media are quite happy to start a Barcelona rumour over absolutely anything.
Part of the Danish media building the doubt around Eriksen was asking the Tottenham star, and others about it. Agents completely unconnected to the matter were quizzed, former players asked their opinion, the Danish national manager had his say, and the Spurs attacker also got in on the act.
Eriksen was asked several times about Barcelona over a two week period, and on one occasion told Ekstra Bladet: “I still have a contract with Tottenham a few more years. There are always rumours about footballers… Barcelona are a great club and I don’t think there are many who say no to Barcelona.”
Eriksen added that he didn’t really want to have an opinion unless there’s ‘concrete interest’, but did underline an ambition to play at the very highest level: “In the future I see myself at the highest level. That’s what I dream about. It can be in about two to three years. It may be at another club or it could be Tottenham if we have come all the way up.”
In an interview with FourFourTwo, the Tottenham player has been asked again, and given a remarkably similar answer, he must be drilled on it: “I’ve already been there in the past (he went on trial as a youngster) but it didn’t work out too well. But, of course, Barcelona is a fantastic football club and I don’t think there are many players who would be able to say no to them. However, until there is actually some concrete interest from them, I don’t have an opinion about that.”
Will the Tottenham star’s comments cause a fuss in the Catalan sport media? The Danish press are likely crossing their fingers right now.
