Arsenal defender Shkodran Mustafi remains key in helping Liverpool sign Ozan Kabak from Schalke on deadline day.
Earlier today, we covered claims made by Sky Deutschland that the Gunners centre-back’s move to the Bundesliga side could allow Kabak complete a move to the Merseyside club.
Mustafi’s current deal at the Emirates runs down at the end of the season and with Schalke keen on the 28-year-old, there have been multiple claims in Germany over the formula of a transfer.
Sky Deutschland journalist Max Bielefeld took to Twitter to report ‘talks are ongoing’ between the defender and Mikel Arteta’s side to terminate his contract, so that he can then sign for Schalke on a free transfer.
If that happens, Mustafi will then sign a six-month contract with the Bundesliga side.

Over at Sport1, their chief reporter Patrick Berger explained Schalke are ‘very interested’ in the former Valencia man to replace Kabak, who is Liverpool bound.
Berger initially stated talks are ongoing between Schalke and Arsenal to take Mustafi on a loan deal until the summer, but later clarified the player is discussing with the north London club to terminate his contract.

Arsenal cancelled Sokratis Papastathopoulos’s contract earlier this month and it remains to be seen if they will also terminate Mustafi’s contract.
