Pushed to one side at Aston Villa, Frédéric Guilbert’s days in the Midlands appear to be counted.
Close to being a regular last season, the Frenchman has seen his game time all but disappear this time around, as Dean Smith chooses to favour the likes of Matty Cash for the right-back role.
That has limited Guilbert’s game time with the first-team to two appearances in the Carabao Cup, and none whatsoever in the Premier League.
However, he could be offered an escape route back to France, where he arrived from in 2019 when he was signed on a free from Caen.
According to French journalist Mohamed Toubache-Ter, FC Lorient in Ligue 1 are ‘studying’ the possibility of acquiring Guilbert from Aston Villa on loan for the January transfer window.
That’s all there is to it for now, but it would probably be an opportunity the 27-year-old would jump at given his current situation at Villa Park these days.
