Newcastle United manager Rafael Benitez allowed Achraf Lazaar to go out on loan last season as he spent the previous campaign in Serie A with Benevento, who were relegated to the second division.
Since returning to St James’ Park, the Moroccan international has failed to make his way into the former Liverpool coach’s plans and has not made a single appearance in any competition this term.
Italian website Calciomercato claims Genoa tried to bring the 26-year-old back to Serie A in the summer, but for some reason, the deal didn’t go through.
It’s claimed that Genoa will once again make an approach for the Tyneside club’s left-back, which is why they have reopened the negotiations with the Premier League outfit.
Lazaar’s contract with his current employers runs down in 2021 and the report mentions that Genoa can finally close the deal for him in the coming weeks, which means in the January transfer window.
Considering he has struggled to find his way into Benitez’s plans, a move away for Lazaar is best suited for both the player and Newcastle.
