If there’s one thing you cannot fault Monchi on, it’s his determination.
Even after being rejected three times by Leicester in Roma’s attempts to sign Riyad Mahrez from Leicester City, the Spanish director of football hasn’t given up just yet.
This is, at least, what Il Tempo are reporting on Monday, claiming Monchi is still hoping he’ll be able to negotiate a deal for the Algeria international in the coming days.
Why? Because he thinks Leicester’s stance on the matter will soften in the coming days if no other clubs come forward for Mahrez, who has been waiting for his move all summer since putting forward a transfer request at the end of last season.
The problem here is, this has apparently been the plan all along, and with Roma unlikely to up their offer and Leicester not exactly in a rush to sell, this could go down to the wire.
The offer, even if rejected for now, still stands, and Roma are hoping the Foxes end up accepting it rather than end up with Craig Shakespeare having to manage an unhappy season until, minimum, January.
It’s a bold move, and, with Emre More seemingly on his way to Inter instead of Roma, time could be running out to find an alternative, but Monchi seems determined to sign Mahrez.
After all, you can’t blame him. He’s quite good at kicking the football.
