Barcelona are ‘going full throttle’ to sign Chelsea star Antonio Rüdiger, according to Sky Deutschland.
The defender’s contract runs down in June and talks with the Blues over an extension have stalled for over nine months. The west London club cannot tie him down to a new deal due to the sanctions imposed by the UK government.
Xavi Hernández’s side want to take advantage of the situation at Chelsea, in order to bring the 29-year-old to the Camp Nou. To do this, they have already taken the first step.
Barca chief Mateu Alemany and Jordi Cryuff met the centre-back’s agent, Sahr Senesie, at a five-star hotel, ‘The Barcelona Edition’. The two parties started the ‘secret negotiations’ for Thomas Tuchel’s man.
Sky further state: ‘The trio takes a seat in a back corner of the hotel bar. In the secret meeting, people drink wine and water, gesticulate wildly, talk in English and laugh a lot. After almost three hours, at 11:48 p.m., the group separates. Senesie stays at the hotel. Alemany and Cruyff talk a few more meters on the street about their impressions, and drive home separately a little later’.
Barca will ‘try everything’ to sign the Chelsea defender in the next window as he fits exactly into the club’s requirements.
The report further adds they ‘definitely want’ him, regardless of the fact that Joan Laporta admitted they already have a deal in place with a centre-back, thought to be Andreas Christensen.
Both Alemany and Cryuff know that in addition to Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain, Real Madrid and Juventus are trying to take Rüdiger for nothing after this season.
However, the Catalan club’s ‘secret meeting’ with his representative shows they are ‘going full throttle’ to sign the Chelsea player.
