Jan Vertonghen’s contract at Tottenham Hotspur expires after this season and failure from Spurs to tie him down to a new deal will see him leave the north London club as a free agent in the summer.
On January 13th, reports coming out of Italy talked about Napoli’s interest in the centre-back.
Corriere dello Sport explained the Serie A side have been in regular contact with the Belgium international’s entourage, while La Repubblica suggested an ‘exchange of loans’ involving the defender and Napoli’s Fernando Llorente.
Journalist Ciro Venerato spoke to CalcioNapoli24 and provided an update on reports linking the 32-year-old to the Naples club.
He claims Napoli had informal contacts with the player’s agent and also with a ‘FIFA agent’ who is close to the Premier League club.
The Tottenham defender is asking for a net salary of €5m per season and his representative wants a big commission payment for Vertonghen to join the Italian side on a free transfer.
Therefore, Venerato adds, Vertonghen and Napoli are ‘two destinies’ that will never meet because of the hefty demands made by the player and his agent.
