After a long spell on the sidelines due to a knee injury, Rangers’ Ianis Hagi returned to action and made his first appearance under Michael Beale’s orders in January.
The manager at Ibrox has handed four more appearances to the 24-year-old, which includes one start in Rangers’ Scottish FA Cup win over Partick Thistle last month. The minutes played with Rangers weren’t enough for him to represent Romania in the ongoing international break.
The Rangers midfielder’s omission from the national team didn’t please his father, Gheorghe Hagi, who slammed the Romania manager, Edward Iordănescu. His quotes are relayed by ProSport, who then claim Ianis’ injury setback in 2022 blocked his move to Aston Villa.
“Ianis needs to take a new step in his career and the injury has set him back. He had a verbal agreement with Aston Villa and, if that bad luck had not occurred, he would now be playing in the Premier League, in England!” a source told ProSport.
This suggests Ianis may have to leave Rangers to take the next step in his career. The latest omission from the Romania squad may not help him get a move away from Michael Beale’s side.
Luckily for Ianis, Borussia Mönchengladbach are interested in him.
A source told ProSport the Bundesliga side have ‘expressed their interest’ in the Rangers player through intermediaries. They further add Gladbach scouts will follow Ianis closely in action for Michale Beale’s side in the coming months.
The Romania international’s contract at Rangers lasts until 2026 and he’s currently valued at €7m.
