Over ten days after the end of the transfer window, Girona director Quique Carcel went to have a word with the Spanish media regarding the moves made by the club this summer.

Among the many subjects discussed in the press conference, there was the transfer of Oriol Romeu, who left Southampton to join the La Liga side on the final days of the market.

Carcel admitted that despite their interest in the Saints player, he actually wasn’t very confident they’d get the signing done at first.

That’s because Romeu was seen as a tough footballer to sign, even though it all got right in the end.

“I put Oriol on the board from the first day as a joke, because of the difficulty,” said Carcel (via Mundo Deportivo).

“When we spoke with his representative, the thing seemed unfeasible. The fact that we contacted him from the first day made Oriol think about it and the player did a lot to be here, it was the key. It is also important to have Pere Guardiola and Manchester City behind, precisely to accompany these signings.”

Now even though Carcel highlights the effort made by Romeu to leave Southampton for Girona, we better point out that it was never reported in Spain that the player forced his way out of the Saints or anything like that.

In fact, the midfielder gave interviews showing gratitude for Southampton, claiming the club ‘prioritised’ his wish of leaving, making it clear the transfer was made in good terms.
