Greek website Sportime.Gr report AEK goalkeeper Vasilios Barkas is continuing to be tracked by Scottish giants Celtic, but there are now more clubs in the race to sign the player, including Montpellier and Ajax.
This week we covered claims from Greece that Mainz are looking to rival Celtic for the Greek goalkeeper’s signature as Neil Lennon looks to bring in a keeper next summer.
According to Sportine.Gr, Barkas is ready to return to action against Panathinaikos this weekend after being sidelined for a month, but it’s claimed AEK may not be able to keep him for much longer because of the interest from other clubs.
AEK sporting director Ilija Ivic is reportedly looking to sell some of his players in the next transfer window and he knows Barkas is the likeliest option when it comes to selling to a big club and getting a reasonable fee.
However, according to Sportime, Mainz’s chances of signing the 25 year old are looking slim as it’s claimed the Bundesliga side will find it difficult to reach the ‘levels’ of Celtic and Montpellier in the race for Barkas.
The Greek international is under contract with his club until June 2022.
