A few days ago, it was reported that Naples was on high alert ahead of the arrival of Liverpool fans in the Italian city, fearing a repeat of the 2010 clashes when three English fans ended up in hospital with stab wounds.
Extra security was put in place for match day, and warnings were sent out giving out advice to travelling fans on how to avoid confrontations.
Unfortunately, that didn’t stop some violence from happening on Tuesday evening, as reported by Corriere del Mezzogiorno, who explain that Napoli ultras went ‘on the warpath’, scouting the old town for a specific group of Liverpool fans.
The local newspaper report the locals were on their scooters, patrolling the area, sending text messages to each other in case they spotted the 50 ‘hooligans’ they were looking for, a group the English authorities are said to have signalled to their Italian counterparts ahead of the game.
When they were spotted, Corriere del Mezzogiorno are very specific, stating it was no knives, just fists, with twelve or so assaults signalled, but no medical treatment needed.
As for what happens on Wednesday, there’s a fear this will continue all throughout the day, especially for those travelling towards the stadium, and even if alcoholic drinks will be banned from 7pm to midnight, ‘it might not be enough’.
