On Wednesday, we published a story explaining how Liverpool’s interest in Benfica striker Carlos Vinícius was the result of media outlets twisting reports and making them something they weren’t.
This is literally all we said: ‘Carlos Vinicius, a 24 year old Brazilian attacker, had a good game despite his side losing 3-2, he scored both of Benfica’s goals.’
TeamTalk then twisted that to: ‘As such, the Reds are scouring Europe in a bid to find a suitable candidate and O Jogo [via Sport Witness] claims Liverpool have a rising interest in 6ft 3in striker Carlos Vinicius, who only joined the club last summer.’
It then ended up all over the place, so it was inevitable the claims would get to the Portuguese newspapers on Thursday, with them buying the story without questioning the original source.
So it’s no surprise that today, the likes of A Bola, O Jogo and Record all have articles saying how Liverpool want to sign the Brazilian in the summer.
Then they credit AS for the claims that Liverpool could pay €60m for the striker. That’s the same thing that O Jogo and Record do.
O Jogo adds that the striker nearly signed for Wolverhampton Wanderers last summer, but couldn’t complete the move due to the lack of a work permit.
However, he could be granted the visa this time, given that he’d be a lot more expensive than before.
There’s no explanation of whether Wolves remain interested.
Of course, it is known that Liverpool were at Benfica’s weekend match, and therefore it’s possible they have interest, just like for the other players on show, but everything else has been twisted.
