Malick Thiaw made his first team debut for Schalke in their 1-1 draw against Hoffenheim on March 7th.

He’s been dubbed as the ‘new Joel Matip’ by the Mirror and it was also reported Liverpool plan to make an approach for him. The report stated, ‘Like Matip, Thiaw is described as a powerful, tall, ball-playing defender, who can also play as a defensive midfielder.’

It was also explained the teenager has a £7m (€7.5m) release clause in his contract, which runs down in 2021.

Bild have dismissed the claims made by the Mirror about the buyout clause.

‘Not true’, states the German tabloid and then adds there’s no such clause in Thiaw’s current deal with Schalke.

Schalke are aware of the youngster’s potential and they want to prevent other clubs from snatching him by offering an extension.

Talks between the Bundesliga side and Thiaw’s representatives over a new contract took place before the Coronavirus outbreak. Schalke sporting director Jochen Schneider has stopped all contract negotiations due to the ongoing pandemic.

For now, both Schalke and Thiaw agree that nothing should be rushed, but the report adds the player’s entourage suggests continuing with David Wagner’s side remains first option for the teenager.
