Romelu Lukaku spent the summer ‘searching for happiness’ as he desperately sought a move away from Chelsea, something he eventually secured with switch to Roma.

That’s according to Corriere dello Sport, who say the Belgian striker is now in a ‘sprint’ to get back to his absolute best and prove his doubters wrong.

The newspaper explains that Lukaku is ‘ready to put in the minutes’ to get back to full strength and fitness so he can make an impact for club and country and get back to his best.

They state that Lukaku ‘spent an entire summer searching for happiness’ amid the ‘torments of the transfer market’ and doubts about his future.

He had returned to Chelsea following a loan spell at Inter Milan and appeared likely to return there, before ill-advised talks with Juventus saw Inter furiously pull out of the race and refuse to sign him.

That left him desperately looking for a new club and ignoring advances from Saudi Arabia, while he also ‘dodged’ criticisms coming his way.

He saw them as something that could see him potentially take his eyes off his goal, which was to be ready for the new season regardless of what shirt he was wearing.

He eventually got his move to Roma and has ‘finally found that long-chased happiness’ he was seeking through the summer. The focus is now on getting fit after ‘almost 90 days of solitude’.

The plan is to relaunch his career and start a new adventure in Italy and become the king of Rome under Jose Mourinho’s guidance. He feels the weight of the team on his shoulders but is ready to embrace that and get them out of a crisis at the beginning of the season.

Roma present a much different task to the ones at Inter, Chelsea and Manchester United, one he is ready to take up to banish the thoughts of a miserable summer window.
