After a miserable spell at Chelsea, it seems a return to RB Leipzig is not quite working out for Timo Werner.

The German forward made the return to his former club earlier this summer, being shipped out by the Blues following a miserable two years after his £47.7m transfer in July 2020.

It appeared he’d fallen back into his old groove in Germany, with a goal on his debut raising hopes of a return to his best.

Both he and Leipzig have been struggling at the beginning of the season, though, and that’s led BILD to look at how much of a problem Werner is for the Bundesliga side.

They explain that Werner is on the verge of hitting 100 goals but for that to happen he will have to show a ‘marked improvement’ in his performances.

He has been ‘lagging behind’ the high expectations since his return from Chelsea and that’s been in keeping with Leipzig in general.

However, there is a growing feeling that Werner is exacerbating the situation. First there is the fact he missed most of pre-season and now needs time to ‘acclimatise’.

Then there’s the swap from the style of play at Chelsea, which is completely different from Leipzig’s and something he is yet to adjust to properly. That’s led to issues linking up with key players such as Christopher Nkunku.

There is also a feeling that the striker doesn’t fit in with manager Domenico Tedesco’s possession game, something ‘critics feared before the switch’.

All in all, things aren’t working out as everyone had hoped, with it even suggested it would be wiser to start Werner on the bench and use him as an impact sub instead.

That’s far from what Werner anticipated, particularly given he left Chelsea to ensure he got more playing time for the World Cup. It does, though, suggest the Blues may have ended up with a better deal that it first appeared.
