Back in October 2014, it was reported in Portugal that Brendan Rodgers was keen on signing Fabio Sturgeon for Liverpool. Rodgers, now in charge at Celtic Park, was said to have given Sturgeon his ‘stamp of approval’ for a transfer, but nothing came of it in the end.
A Celtic official was at the match between Belenenses and Rio Ave on Sunday, and it doesn’t take too big a leap to believe Sturgeon could be Rodgers’ target again. Since the Celtic manager was first linked with Strugeon he’s progressed and now has around 100 appearances, despite still being only 22 years of age.
The attacking midfielder has been linked to Portugal’s biggest clubs, and if Rodgers has an interest in signing Sturgeon for Celtic then he’d need to get in before that sort of move happens. Benfica are said to have some kind of first option on the player, but that rarely counts for a lot in practice.
Along with Celtic, Manchester United had an official at the match, and Jose Mourinho was also linked with Sturgeon during the manager’s time at Chelsea. A move to Celtic would make more sense for the youngster, with a greater chance of game time under Rodgers.
A Bola, who published the scouting list, don’t claim a target for Celtic. Given that clubs usually scout the home team then it’s likely a Belenenses player was on the agenda, and given the ages and profiles of the players on show, Sturgeon stands out. Add to that a previous link to Brendan Rodgers, and it’s not too left field to believe Celtic are keeping an eye on the youngster.
