Signed to replace Alisson Becker, who has done so well at Liverpool, Robin Olsen had a big task on his hands when he arrived at AS Roma in 2018.
Perhaps predictably, he was a disappointment to the Serie A club, and they’ve been looking to offload him for some time. Celtic have been repeatedly linked with the 30 year old, and that remains the case despite them signing Vasilis Barkas at the end of July.
Il Messaggero report, via Calcio Casteddu, that the goalkeeper would quite like a return to Cagliari. He spent last season on loan at the Sardinia club and is open to going back.
Celtic, according to the claims, have so far made the ‘most concrete’ offer. The Scottish Premiership club wanted a season long loan, but were only prepared to pay 50% of the player’s wages.
This was considered insufficient by Roma, who are looking to sell the player on a permanent transfer.
That sounds very unlikely for Celtic, given the purchase of Barkas. Il Messaggero aren’t clear on when the offer came from Glasgow, so there’s the possibility it was before the Greek goalkeeper was signed, and that Roma are still using the approach to put pressure on others, including Cagliari.
Celtic being keen on a low-cost loan is conceivable, as an insurance option to Barkas, yet if Roma won’t accept that it’s clear this one isn’t going anywhere.
