We’ve got to that time of the year when players head back to their home countries and openly speak to the local media about their futures.
This is the case of Ezequel Schelotto, who’s has been interviewed by TNT Sports this week. The Brighton & Hove Albion defender has talked about his wish of returning to Argentina, although there are no talks going on so far.
Schelotto was asked about the clubs he would like to join in case he leaves Europe, and he’s named a couple of them, both having some ties with his past.
“My whole family are Velez fans, I grew up in the neighborhood and I went to the school there, I have a very velezana family,” Schelotto told TNT (via Olé).
“I don’t have that passion, but what do I know… I also like Banfield, because I have many memories of the academy. If I go to two clubs, it’s those two.”
Both clubs have famous former footballers in charge. While Velez Sarsfield are currently managed by Gabriel Heinze, Banfield are bossed by Hernan Crespo. But Schelotto claims that he hasn’t spoken to either of them.
“I don’t know Heinze, but if a coach calls you, it’s something that shakes you, moves you. I’ve always had approaches, but a manager never called me. If a coach calls you, the floor moves. I would like to take up the challenge of playing in Argentine football.”
Schelotto has spent the last six months on loan at Chievo Verona, where he’s made only four appearances this season, before having a knee injury.
That’s actually all the playing time the defender had in the past year, since he wasn’t being used by Brighton when he left for Italy. Now that he’s returning to England, it should be time for the club to take a new decision on his future.
His contract with the Seagulls runs until 2020.
