Brendan Rodgers’ recent quotes about Islam Slimani have turned out to be quite a big deal for the Portuguese press today.
With the Leicester City boss suggesting the striker may not have a place in the Foxes’ squad after the end of his loan spell at Fenerbahce, rumours about his return to Sporting are about to grow.
“It has obviously been a difficult one for him and, listen, sometimes it just doesn’t work out at a club. That is the way it is,” Brendan Rodgers said. “But I am in discussions with Jon Rudkin and the club in terms of all the players and where we are at, and making sure all our group is strong, and he is one of the players I need to look at and assess what he is doing.”
Covering the quotes today, newspaper A Bola says Rodgers ‘wasn’t clear, but made it understood that the striker won’t have a place in the team next season’.
A Bola writes that the quotes ‘make Sporting’s hopes bigger’ as they plan to bring Slimani back to the club in the summer.
The biggest problem continues to be his salary, as he makes €3m per season at Leicester City, and the Lions can’t afford that.
A Bola still doesn’t make it clear if Slimani would be signed on a permanent transfer or a loan deal. What they say is that he wishes to make the move, and that should be crucial for it to happen.
