The endless rumours linking Manchester City to Grêmio forward Everton get a new chapter in the Brazilian media this week.
As reported by Globo Esporte, club and player are currently in negotiations for a new contract, in an attempt to protect him from the European interest.
There aren’t any clear pretenders for the 22-year-old right now, and that’s why Globo Esporte recalls two clubs who have been previously interested in him: Manchester City and Lazio.
The website doesn’t seem to know if these sides would be interested in signing Everton in the next transfer window, but as big European clubs, they serve as an example of what could be coming in the transfer market.
Manchester City’s links with Everton date back to 2014, when the club reportedly started monitoring him. Since then, the rumours come and go, with some sources claiming that the chase is still on.
Both Everton and Grêmio are in great form lately. The player scored two goals in the 5-0 win over Cerro Porteño in Copa Libertadores last week, and another one in the 5-1 victory over Santos for the Brazilian league at the weekend.
Globo Esporte claims that even though Grêmio are trying to protect the player by renewing his contract, there’s still a chance he can be sold in case a good bid comes to the club. In our opinion, a dozen of millions would do.
