With Wellington Silva failing his Bordeaux medical, Arsenal won’t be making the small profit on the transfer they had expected. Using their buyback clause with Silva’s current club Fluminense, the idea was for Arsenal to sign the player and then sell him on to Bordeaux.

Silva failing the medical has led to some doubt over what happens now. Sport Witness explained earlier on Tuesday that it would be unlikely for Silva to be left at Arsenal, with the Premier League club surely having some protection against such a scenario.

Brazil’s Globo Esporte confirm that, and say Silva will now immediately travel back to Fluminense. There’s no danger of Arsenal being caught in the middle and left with a player they can’t use.

Globo have spoken to the player’s agent Alexandre Soares, who explained the reasons for a medical failure: “During the medical examinations a small inflammation was detected in the groin. It’s not serious and the footballer is able to play, but the French club has chosen not to continue with the contract.”

Fluminense have told Globo that Silva will undergo further examinations when he returns to Brazil, because the player was perfectly fine when he left.

Have Arsenal flown Silva over by cattle class, hoping to maximise every penny of their potential profit, and he’s suffered an injury when getting up from his seat? Who knows, but, for now, the Bordeaux transfer looks completely off.
