Blackburn Rovers summer signing Andreas Weimann has insisted the club don’t need to be promoted to keep him in future.

The 33-year-old has been speaking to 90 Minuten about his career and his plans moving forwards as he enters what is likely to be the final phase of his playing career.

The Austrian has been a permanent fixture in English football since 2007, when he first joined Aston Villa’s U18s from Rapid U18s.

He moved his way up the ranks at Villa Park and ended up as a first-team player, making 129 appearances for them before joining Derby County in July 2015.

Since then, he’s played for Wolves, Bristol City, West Bromwich Albion and now Blackburn Rovers, joining the latter on a free transfer at the beginning of August.

He’s yet to fully establish himself at Ewood Park but has two goals in nine games in the Championship this season and another in two games in the EFL Cup.

This season is very much one in which he needs to impress given his current deal with the Championship side only runs until June 2025. Weimann, though, would be more than happy to extend that if given the chance.

“Staying is not dependent on promotion,” he said.

“I’ve been active in the Championship for nine years. We’ll see how the season goes. I can’t say yet what will happen next.

“I’ve played in every game so far, hopefully this trend continues. At the end of the season, it will be clear whether I stay at Blackburn or not. Of course, I hope to stay. Blackburn is a big, traditional club that has already won the Premier League. I’ve always been lucky enough to play for big clubs. I don’t see a big difference to Blackburn.

“I have a one-year contract. I really like it here. Of course, it depends on the club whether they want to extend my contract.”
