Ending a run of Championship games by scoring a brace isn’t a bad way to move into the international break, and it’s what Andreas Weimann managed at the weekend.

The 33-year-old scored twice in a 3-1 Blackburn Rovers victory over Cardiff City.

John Eustace has Blackburn Rovers ninth in the Championship, nine points behind current leaders Sunderland.

That hasn’t stopped Weimann from aiming for promotion this season, and he may have to go through more Play-Off drama, although this time will be hoping things can go his way.

Weimann joined Blackburn Rovers in the summer after his Bristol City contract came to an end and wasn’t renewed. He’s got a one year deal with the Lancashire club and has clear aims for what he wants to achieve in that time.

Currently away with Austria’s national side, Weimann has been speaking to the media in his home country and that’s when his Blackburn Rovers aims got a mention.

Laola quote him as saying: “I’ve already lost three times in the playoff semi-finals for Premier League promotion. It would be a big goal of mine to get promoted, also because I’ve come close a few times. We have a very good team, even though we almost got relegated last season. The Championship is difficult to play in, anything can happen. If you have a run of five or six games, you’re up there and vice versa.”

On his goal against Cardiff City after a period without scoring, he explained: “I hadn’t scored in a few games before, which isn’t nice because as a striker you always want to score. But I’m experienced enough to look at other aspects when I don’t score for a while. Of course I still get annoyed when I miss chances. But over time you see certain things differently in your career, which is why I’m happy when we win as a team and I defended well. But goals are always nice, of course, and it’s even more gratifying when you score twice.”
