The ‘almost mathematical loss of La Liga’ has convinced Barcelona, led by president Joan Laporta, to ‘undertake a profound remodelling’ in the summer, reports Mundo Deportivo.
It’s claimed 14 Barca players are at the exit door and the club plan to cut ties with them through sales, loan deals or by rescinding their contracts.
The likes of Neto, Samuel Umtiti, Junior Firpo, Miralem Pjanić, Philippe Coutinho and Martin Braithwaite fall into the aforementioned category.
Ronald Koeman’s side must focus on renewing the contracts of Lionel Messi and Sergio Roberto. The Argentine is a free agent in the summer, while the Spaniard’s deal expires in 2022.
As part of the ‘revolution,’ the Catalan club also wants to bring in new players to bolster the squad so that they can challenge on all fronts.
Manchester City’s Eric García is set to join Barca and his arrival will solve the centre-back position.
Sergio Agüero and Lyon’s Memphis Depay are best positioned to arrive at the Camp Nou to strengthen the attacking division. All three players can join Barcelona on free transfers in the next market.
For the midfield, Koeman likes Georginio Wijnaldum, whose contract expires at Liverpool next month. The Dutchman’s name has been on the club’s table since the last summer.
Barca are targeting free agents in the summer and offloading fringe players would help them financially.
Laporta has a plan in place for the next market and time will tell whether or not it’ll take shape.
