Cristian Romero has emerged as a new centre-back target for Manchester United in the last few days.

The defender is currently on loan at Atalanta from Juventus and there’s an option to make his stay permanent.

‘Baring any surprises,’ Gian Piero Gasperini’s side will pay €16m to the Old Lady to buy the 23-year-old.

That’s according to Calciomercato.it, but they say the Argentine’s future is likely to be away from the Serie A side.

Although Atalanta have plans to exercise the option to buy the Juve owned player, they could ‘resell Romero immediately’ in the summer. The Red Devils get a mention as they are in the picture to sign the South American.

It’s claimed Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side ‘boast excellent relations’ with Atalanta and that could be a factor in helping them in landing Romero.

Atalanta will ask around €40m for Romero and if they end up selling him to Manchester United or anyone else, the Italian side ‘dream’ of replacing the central defender with Lille’s Sven Botman.

Several big clubs are chasing the Dutchman and the Ligue 1 side will need at least €35m to let Botman leave.

If Atalanta end up selling Romero to United for €40m, they could at least have a shot at signing the Lille man, who is their ‘dream’ target.
