On September 26th, we carried a report from Mundo Deportivo, who claimed that Barcelona like Frenkie De Jong ‘a lot’ and the Ajax midfielder would take a decision on his future in the ‘coming weeks’.
Another Catalan newspaper Sport claims in today’s edition that the Dutchman is attracting interest from several top clubs across Europe and the La Liga winners are one of them.
The report mentions the Blaugrana have already converted their interest by making ‘two formal offers’ with the Eredivisie outfit for the 21-year-old, but their sporting director, Marc Overmars, has so far given a negative response.
Erik ten Hag’s side are aware that it will be difficult for them to hold on to their player for the long term, but they are believe the time for him to leave the Amsterdam club isn’t in the January window.
De Jong is aware that he still needs to develop and improve as a player, which is why his short-term plans will be with his current employers and therefore, Ajax turned down Barcelona’s two approaches.
This all neatly fits in with the Catalan media now somewhat getting bored of De Jong and deciding Matthijs de Ligt is the man Ernesto Valverde will want for Barcelona in January.
