There’s something nice about Aston Villa popping up all over the European media at the moment, with the grand old club getting more coverage now they’re back at their rightful level.
Everything about the club is of more interest to the sport media, and that includes their Spain based recruiter Juanfran.
The former Celta Vigo player has been speaking to Marca, and picked out a player at the Spanish club who he feels it’s perfect for the top level of English football: Maxi Gomez.
Juanfran said about the Uruguayan: “He has a profile of a Premier League player, for his conditions, for having an important aerial game, because he can give you different variables coming out with the ball from behind, for the strike he has or mobility.
“He is a reference nine, he is always well placed, attentive to the second plays, above all what is asked of a striker is a goal. He has it and that’s why he interests the Premier League and other competitions.”
Does that mean there’s a chance of a move to Aston Villa? No, probably not. Celta are likely looking for a lot more than the Birmingham club want to spend, and Gomez will be hoping for European football, or at least a reasonable shot at it.
On his work at Villa, Junafran explained: “I’ve seen every weekend a minimum of three games in Spain or Portugal live. Normally there are four or five, plus I see on TV. But the first thing was to know Aston Villa. Their model, style of play, history. you can hardly advise players to a club if you do not know it in depth.”
Wise words.
