Aston Villa’s Robin Olsen has been included in Sweden manager Jon Dahl Tomasson’s squad for October’s international break.
Sweden will face Slovakia and Estonia in the UEFA Nations League this month, and the Aston Villa goalkeeper will be forced to miss these games due to fitness concerns.
This has been confirmed by the Svenska Fotbollförbundet [Sweden football association].
They have released a statement on their official website stating that the 34-year-old, Celta Vigo’s Carl Starfelt and Club Brugge’s Gustaf Nilsson have withdrawn from the squad ‘due to injuries’. It’s also said the trio are now ‘focusing on rehabilitation’.
There’s no mention of the nature of the setback suffered by Olsen or any further details of his injury. The Villans man was also left out of the Sweden squad last month.
Jon Dahl Tomasson has Stoke City’s Viktor Johansson AIK Fotboll’s Kristoffer Nordfeldt and other goalkeepers available, therefore, he has decided not to bring in a replacement for the Aston Villa goalkeeper for the upcoming fixtures.
Olsen hasn’t made an appearance for Unai Emery’s side this season. Emiliano Martínez is the first-choice stopper at Aston Villa, with Joe Gauci as his backup, ahead of the Swede.
