On Monday, Russian Youtuber Evgeny Savin released a documentary he’s made with Henrikh Mkhitaryan.
We covered some of the player’s quotes, of him talking about the problems he had with José Mourinho at Manchester United, which led him to leave for Arsenal in 2018.
And it turns out that the Armenian star could’ve actually played for other Premier League sides before that. That’s because Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur had been interested in signing him back in his time in Ukraine.
Following a successful spell at Shakhtar Donetsk, Mkhitaryan was wanted by several European sides, and the two English clubs had been trying to take him from the club in 2013.
“I left with Raiola for London, initially to speak with Tottenham. We were waiting for offers from Liverpool but we weren’t sure,” said Mkhitaryan (via Siamo La Roma).
“Then we received the call from Dortmund and immediately flew to Germany. They had sold Götze and needed a new ‘number 10’. At Liverpool and Tottenham the seats were already taken, so moving to Borussia was the best thing to do. Klopp immediately told me his ideas, where he saw me on the pitch.”
Mkhitaryan played for Borussia Dortmund for three seasons, until being bought by Manchester United in 2016 in a €42m deal. He only stayed at Old Trafford for a year and a half, having later moved to Arsenal for €34m.
Finally in the last summer, the Gunners decided to loan him to Roma, where he has six goals and four assists in 20 appearances so far.
