Securing the impressive capture of Jordan Amavi from Aston Villa, Marseille aren’t quite done in the transfer market as Andoni Zubizarreta still looks to bolster his side’s defence and attack for the 2017/18 season.
Still lacking proper cover at right-back, Rudi Garcia appears to have asked for reinforcements in that department, and the option to sign Arsenal’s Mathieu Debuchy has reappeared.
This isn’t the first time the Ligue 1 side have been linked with the Gunners’ outcast, as keeping the 32-year-old as a last minute option always appeared a possibility for the Marseille manager.
After all, he knows Debuchy well, having managed him at Lille, notably during their 2011 league winning season.
France Football are the ones reporting this story on Wednesday, claiming there’s a good chance the right-back could find an amicable solution with Arsenal that would see him be released in order to be signed on a free by his next club.
However, L’Equipe, with their own version of the story, don’t make it sound as simple.
With Marseille’s primary focus being a new striker to partner Valère Germain, that’s where the funds and wage are set to be prioritised and any potential move for Debuchy would only come very late on in the transfer window.
Knowing he will get limited chances at the Emirates, the defender would be open to a move to France, and with dreams of still making Didier Deschamps’ squad for the 2018 World Cup, an exit is the best move.
With a long season ahead, Debuchy would certainly get some time on the pitch at Marseille, providing competition for Hiroki Sakai.
That’s if he stays fit, of course.
