Sunday was a great day for Pau Lopez. The goalkeeper got married and, more importantly for the purposes at hand, it was reported Tottenham and Espanyol had started talking again about a deal.
Not only that, Spanish newspaper Sport said an agreement was ‘very close’, an announcement was said to be on the way, and Pau would finally, FINALLY, be a Tottenham player on a permanent basis.
Sport claimed a deal would be done at €2.5m, which managed to please both clubs.
Doves were released into the air and a fat lady warmed up her vocal chords. Hurrah, the end is nigh!
But no, it’s not to be, explain AS.
Ruining the happy ending, AS say Tottenham’s interest may well be reborn, but the word from Espanyol is: ‘Pau stays’
Roberto Jimenez is off to Malaga, and Pau will now be second choice behind Diego Lopez. Then he can leave for free in a year, perhaps to Tottenham speculate AS.
To Pau, this transfer has seemed like china in his hand.
