Over the past couple of days, various members of the French media have been trying to push the story that Everton are getting closer and closer to signing Bordeaux’s Malcom.
While no offer has been made as of yet, L’Equipe claimed the negotiations between the two sides were going well enough that an agreement could be reached by the end of the week if need be.
Foot Mercato then jumped in, stating the deal bringing the Brazilian to Goodison Park was tied to that of Ademola Lookman’s potential exit to RB Leipzig, meaning one wouldn’t happen without the other.
Considering the Bundesliga side weren’t prepared, at least for now, to meet Everton’s demands, everything was at a bit of stalemate, which appears to have allowed AS Roma to wade in, seemingly emboldened by the money they are about to receive from Liverpool for the transfer of Alisson.
According to Malcom’s agent, Fernando Garcia, who was speaking to TeleRadioStereo, relayed by FC Inter News, a meeting is due to take place with the Serie A side’s director of football very soon.
He said: “In the next few hours, I will get in touch with Monchi. The player wants to go to Italy, and [Roma] are very interested. Does he cost €40m? I only take care of the kid’s contract”.
This suggests Malcom has recently changed his mind about what he wants in life, or he only wants a club capable of playing in the Champions League.
We say this because, back in January, Bordeaux’s president, Stéphane Martin, claimed the winger wanted to play in the Premier League around the time Tottenham were heavily linked.
It seems like it could end up being a choice between money and Champions League football for the 21-year-old this summer.
If it comes to that, Everton might have to be very convincing, as we all know what Roma can do for the careers of left-footed right wingers.
