Since it was revealed by the English media that Liverpool have been keeping an eye on Benfica midfielder Enzo Fernandez, the Portuguese press can’t stop talking about it.
It’s well known the player wouldn’t leave the Eagles this summer, as it was only in July that the Lisbon side managed to sign him in a €10m deal from River Plate.
With an impressive start to the season, where besides doing a great job in midfield he has also scored three goals, the local media sounds proud that Benfica managed to get to him before a club like Liverpool did.
Today, Radio Renascença featured an interview with former Eagles’ star Valdo. Among the subjects he talked about, there was this rumour about Enzo Fernandez. That’s when 58-year-old praised Benfica for getting there early for the signing.
“In this crazy market, whoever draws the fastest comes out ahead. It’s a kind of Western. When Liverpool opened their eyes it was already too late,” Valdo told Renascença.
Valdo also claimed he hopes “Enzo can stay for a long time”, despite saying that “in this crazy market, anything can happen”.
Enzo Fernandez is well protected by Benfica with a €125m release clause, and another reason the Eagles should demand a big amount for his slave is that River Plate will still have 25% of a future transfer. So if Liverpool continue to be impressed with the midfielder’s performances in the Champions League, they better be prepared to spend big.
