Newcastle United fans must be getting tired of being told they’re on the verge of signing Miguel Almiron, but with his season almost over, there’s the distinct possibility of an announcement soon should everything go the way it’s being suggested.
Cronica in Paraguay say ‘it’s already a fact’ that Almiron will be leaving Atlanta United, and that Newcastle have taken a ‘decisive step’ to complete the signing.
The Premier League club are said to be willing to financially please the MLS club, and pay a fee of $25m for the player, which at today’s exchange rate works out to be £19.6m.
Before they part with so much money, Newcastle first want to take the player on loan and the money would only be paid via a ‘purchase option’ rather than an obligatory redemption clause.
Cronica say Almiron has chosen the club because he feels he’s likelier to get games there, rather than sitting on the bench elsewhere.
The reasons for preference were first reported around a week ago, and we contacted the player’s agent at the time. Daniel Campos dismissed it: “Not at all. Miguel doesn’t ever talk about that. There is nothing yet.”
He also calmed the general rumours: “I’m in contact with several clubs but I do not have any offers yet,. And I’m not going to name clubs when there’s a lot of speculation. We’ll see what happens with time.”
