Alexandre Mendy was keen on joining Sunderland in the summer window and repeatedly asked SM Caen to sanction a move. His agent went public to insist the striker wanted the switch to the Stadium of Light and they wouldn’t give up.
Well, in the end, they pretty much had to. The Black Cats weren’t able to sign him because the Ligue 2 side refused to sanction his sale.
Caen manager Nicolas Seube this week expressed his delight over blocking the 30-year-old’s move to Sunderland. On Monday, Mendy scored his first goal of this season but his side lost 3-1 to Grenoble in front of ‘very, very empty stands’.
Tuesday’s edition of Ouest-France claims the Guinea-Bissau international has responded well after a failed move to Sunderland. That wasn’t enough to stop his side losing.
Since the start of the season the club has been having a torrid time. After seeing themselves as promotion candidates, they find themselves 16th and third from bottom after four games.
Former Sunderland midfielder Yann M’Vila joined Caen last month. He’s yet to win a game with his new club and was fuming after the defeat against Grenoble.
“We can only blame ourselves for this defeat. I don’t want to be vulgar or say too strong words, because that could shock some people […] We give them the match, it’s frustrating. I could speak very badly, I’m frustrated and angry with ourselves,” he told beIN Sports, relayed by Foot Mercato.
“We can’t say it’s the supporters, the sale of the club, the transfer window is over. That’s it, everyone is focused on the club, we have no excuses. We have to get our heads back in place. We know that Ligue 2 is difficult, every match is a fight, and we’ve lost them all since the start of the season. Today, we lost without style.”
