Manchester United are very near the front of the queue to sign Toby Alderweireld from Tottenham Hotspur this summer, according to Belgium’s DH on Sunday.
In an article voicing worries about what may happen with Alderweireld for Belgium at the World Cup should he continue to be out of the Tottenham team, DH say a transfer is increasingly likely if things continue this way.
That goes without saying, and perhaps so do the linked clubs. DH say PSG are best placed, ‘just in front’ of Manchester United, and then throw Barcelona in as well.
It’s worth pointing out the French press haven’t made a big deal of Alderweireld to PSG, and the same can be said of the Catalan media and Barcelona.
Alderweireld to PSG would make some sense (as Sport Witness’ Tom Coast explained here) but it’s mainly been pushed from Belgium, and PSG’s local media seem to often be well informed on transfers.
Alongside that, Manchester United links also make some sense with Jose Mourinho’s defence continuing to look shaky when put under pressure by the better teams. Alderweireld’s experience would be something Mourinho would surely like, and if a Tottenham exit is to happen then Old Trafford wouldn’t appear an odd destination.
Manchester United are the only English club to get a mention from DH, with Chelsea not included in the article.
