Leeds United’s reported pursuit of Jerry Mbakogu was a feature towards the end of the end of the winter transfer window.
Gazzetta dello Sport reported Leeds United had sent officials to watch the striker for Carpi as they beat Spezia 2-1 in Serie B. He played very well in the match and soon there were claims of an agreed deal.
Leeds United were said to have agreed a move with the player and an outline agreement with Carpi for around €4m.
Gazzetta dello Sport then came back into the story, reporting Leeds United were holding a meeting in Milan on January 29th to seal a deal. Mbakogu would stay with Carpi for the rest of the season, and Leeds would be paying €7m.
TMW then reported Leeds and Carpi were still working on a deal, but problems, likely over a work permit meant, were a hurdle.
This week GazzaMercato, a more rumour driven cousin of Gazzetta dello Sport, claimed Leeds ‘does not give up’ and have continued working on the transfer despite the window closing.
A deal is ‘set for the summer’ for a fee of €5m including bonuses, and now they just have to sort out the work permit situation.
Lorenzo Tonetti, an associate of Andrea Radrizzani, is said to have been an intermediary to help get the deal agreed.
