Jordan Veretout has always had a high opinion of himself. At times it’s seen the former Aston Villa player come across as arrogant in interviews, but to be fair to the Frenchman he’s really starting to get to the level he’s always believed himself to be at.

Things didn’t work out for the midfielder at Aston Villa and he wasn’t willing to hang around and give the Championship a go. Leaving on loan, Veretout then made a permanent move to Fiorentina in the last summer transfer window.

Life in Florence has proven to be everything Veretout wanted, and he’s been getting rave reviews in the Italian media, with even the suggestion he could be called up to the France squad sooner or later.

Given all of this, L’Equipe were intrigued to know, given that he couldn’t impress at Aston Villa, how Veretout settled in to Fiorentina life so quickly.

“I already had a first experience abroad and it didn’t go well. I knew why: I hadn’t done a complete preparation with Aston Villa. Then, I also played the friendly matches during which I was able to find my place on the team. To adapt well, you have to be there from the beginning. If you wait in your club, knowing that you will leave, you are not 100% in your preparation.”

So that’s it, a poor preseason scuppered Veretout’s chances at Aston Villa, and a good one with Fiorentina enabled him to get to the level he’s currently enjoying.

He makes it sound so easy. Of course, we’ll have to ignore the fact he only actually joined Fiorentina right at the end of July.
